*Kimihiro Watanuki
An orphaned boy cursed with the ability to see yôkai (spirits), Watanuki entered into an agreement with Yûko to work for her in exchange for the fulfillment of his wish–to never see spirits again. However, despite the fact that he hates his ability, Watanuki often goes out of his way to help people that he comes into contact with because of his power, even when he is not required to do so by his job. He is also very independent, because he has had to live alone for most of his life, and is an excellent cook and housekeeper.
Watanuki is infatuated with his classmate, Himawari, and frequently tries to impress her in any way he can. He looks on his other classmate, Dômeki, as a potential rival for Himawari, even though the other boy has never really expressed an interest in her. Because of Dômeki's ability to repel spirits, Watanuki must spend increasingly more time in his presence, and this has begun to alter their relationship to a sort of grudging friendship. Despite this, Watanuki outwardly reacts in a very hostile way towards Dômeki, though his actions towards him often speak differently than his words.
*Yûko Ichihara
Being one extremely experienced in her industry, Yûko is not foolish enough to give away her real name like Watanuki. That aside, Yûko has served as a major catalyst for Watanuki's transformation, acting somewhat as his mentor. She loves to drink and eat Watanuki's wonderful cooking and dragging Watanuki on crazy outings at the drop of a hat.
Despite this immature and free-spirited attitude, Yûko has been known to be sage-like and serious when the time calls for it. Yûko seems to know the true hitsuzen that Watanuki will follow, and has often offered cryptic messages to warn him of impending danger or a folk tale that he should take a bit more seriously. She also seems to truly care about him, making sure he is safe at night, sending the Kudakitsune (pipe-fox) with him for extra protection, or calling Dômeki when he needs saving.
Yûko is very powerful when it comes to magic and knowledge and is highly respected within the spirit realm. However, she doesn't often appear to get directly involved in things beyond whatever contact she has with those making wishes. Sometimes, she sends Watanuki to do jobs for her, such as when she granted a wish from Himawari. Yûko seems to take the role of someone playing chess when it comes to the big picture of things that are going on.
*Shizuka Dômeki
Dômeki is Watanuki's classmate and one-sided rival. He is part of the school's archery club and often participates (and tops) school competitions. He lives by a shrine owned by his late grandfather.
Dômeki's personality is a total opposite that of Watanuki's. He has a cool, calm and often sarcastic character. Much to the annoyance of Watanuki, he seems to hang around him especially when Watanuki gets a chance to be alone with Himawari.
While Watanuki is monster bait, Dômeki is monster repellant, due to his grandfather's exorcism abilities that were passed down to him. The fortune teller from volume 2 foresees Dômeki's arrival into the story, stating that Watanuki will gain a friend that he'll constantly fight with, but their relationship will "run deeper".
Yûko advises that Watanuki stay close to Dômeki because his very presence drives away the spirits that attack Watanuki, but Watanuki's jealousy and general annoyance with Dômeki's mellow, laid-back demeanor keep him from liking Dômeki–or at least admitting that he does. The fact that on several occasions Dômeki has had to come to Watanuki's rescue doesn't help, especially since most of these situations involve Watanuki passing out and Dômeki having to carry him somewhere to rest, or Watanuki falling from a building just to have his wrist caught by Dômeki at the last second. As payment for his services, Watanuki makes him bento lunches (sometimes with Yûko's nudging, sometimes without), and Dômeki often demands really difficult or impossible lunch requests for the next day just to irk him.
*Himawari Kunogi
Watanuki's main love interest. He has been infatuated with Himawari ever since the beginning of the series and even some cryptic remarks from Yûko like "are you sure she's good luck?" haven't deterred him.
Himawari is caring and kind towards Watanuki, but she has her own reasons to avoid him to become closer to her, as for some reason she was born with the power to cause serious misfortune (although unintended) to those around her, an issue that even brought death to her grandmother and sometimes put her friends in trouble.
All who have been close to her have had some kind of misfortune befall them (except her parents - for if they did have bad luck - she would have never been born.) This is why she always tried to avoid walking home with Watanuki ("I have errands to run"), not wanting to cause him any more bad luck.
In chapter 117, Himawari touches Watanuki's shoulder, and thus indirectly causes him to nearly fall to his death from a window. Not wishing to cause him any more harm, she tries to say a final goodbye as Watanuki is recovering, but when he finally confesses his feelings for her, she finally begins to open up.
She used to wear her hair in loose ponytails, but now after the wish - she changes her hairstyle to cover the scars now covering her back.
*Maru & Moro
Maru and Moro (short for Maru-dashi and Moro-dashi) are the two girls that led Watanuki into Yûko's shop. It isn't stated whether they were created by Yûko, Clow Reed, the both of them, or someone else entirely, but since they have no souls and cannot leave the shop, it can be assumed that they were created there.
Possible Powers-In chapter 126, Yûko explained why Maru and Moro are required to stay inside the shop. The shop itself is not seen by anyone unless they are fated to do business with Yûko. Maru and Moro's concentration is what is keeping the shop in existence. As a side-effect, they have long deep bouts of sleep.
They help out around the shop, but mostly act as the cheering squad. They almost always speak in unison, or close to it. Watanuki seems to get along with them most of the time, at least when they are not dragging him into one of Yûko's plans.
It is noted that Maru and Moro's full names are both words which mean "exposing oneself in public" – similar to "flashing" and "streaking" in English, and something that is quite possibly a pun on the 'xxx' part of xxxHOLiC. Even though the 'xxx' are intended to act as a variable in the title, their appearance resembles the 'XXX' which is synonymous with pornography. Given the target seinen audience, this double meaning is probably intentional.
There are very few instances that Maru and Moro are in serious scenes. In the parasite angel chapter, Watanuki invited them to join him in the festival, however Maru and Moro said in unison (in a rather dazed look) "those without souls cannot leave this place... for their bodies will disintegrate."
They also show some concern not only for Yûko but also for Watanuki despite the fact they always annoy him. In volume 6 of the manga, when Watanuki came home from visiting the "lady in the park", Maru and Moro immediately sensed that something was wrong with Watanuki. When Watanuki finally collapsed, the two dragged Watanuki as far as the store's gates, saying "This is as far as we can go" before tossing Watanuki out to a waiting Dômeki. In the anime, Watanuki also shows signs of slight affection to the two; in episode 18, when Dômeki read a letter to Watanuki written by Mokona and Maru/Moro, Watanuki was somewhat pleased to see that they thought of him.
*Mokona Modoki
While the white Mokona left to travel the worlds with the Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle group, the black Mokona stayed behind to act as a liaison between the Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle group and Yûko. Mokona likes to be around Yûko, drink with her and eat the meals that Watanuki has made, and mostly chirps in with Maru and Moro. Yûko has mentioned that the Mokonas were created a very long time ago by herself and Clow Reed, in preparation for a future event–the arrival and subsequent journey of the Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle group–as well as to stop Fei Wong Reed's plans and save "two futures". Yûko and Clow also fashioned the ear accessories of the two Mokonas, possibly separately from the Mokonas themselves. In the manga, Yûko explains that the White Mokona's accessory (the red one) amplifies magic powers, while the blue accessory of the Black Mokona seals magic powers. The specific effects of the accessories and how they work are unclear.
Both Mokona are based on the character of the same name from Magic Knight Rayearth. It is one of a few of the crossovers that show up in holic.
*Syaoran
The main character and protagonist for the first half of the story. Childhood friend of Princess Sakura. He is known for his kind nature and his calm determination. At the beginning Syaoran does not have any magical power, but is an excellent martial artist and an aspiring archaeologist with extensive knowledge of various languages, histories, and artifacts. It's later revealed that Syaoran is actually a clone of Syaoran Li that was originally created in order to collect Princess Sakura's feathers.
*Syaoran Li
The son of Sakura Kinomoto and Syaoran Li from Cardcaptor Sakura. At the age of 14 he is imprisoned by Fei Wong Reed and is seen throughout the first half of the series asleep in a magically-sealed tank. After awakening he joins the group with the wish of protecting Sakura. He is said to have some sort of strong connection with Watanuki from xxxHolic, though it hasn't yet been made clear.
*Sakura
The Princess of Clow Country. Sakura is a cheerful, selfless, and strong-hearted young woman. She states if there was ever something that she could do, she would try her absolute best. Her feathers are the manifestation of her soul, namely her heart and memories. She possesses a mysterious power, manifest in the magical powers of her wings, which is sought by Fei Wong Reed. In chapter 178, a shocking revelation is made. A crossover character from Cardcaptor Sakura.
*Kurogane
A rough-mannered ninja from the world of Nihon (Japan), exiled for his recklessness. He originally possessed the blade Ginryû before giving it to Yûko as price for his deal with her.
*Fay D. Flourite
A laid-back mage from the Country of Celes. Although he seems happy-go-lucky and pretends to know less than he does, there is more to him than meets the eye. He appears to be on the run from his mysterious past.
*Mokona
A creature given to "Syaoran", Fay and Kurogane by Yûko in exchange for their most-valued possessions to help find Sakura's memories (the feathers). A created imitation from the character in Magic Knight Rayearth which could not talk. There is also a black Mokona.
*Chi
A "chobit," a technologically advanced persocom rumored to possess true machine intelligence, unlike other persocoms.Hideki finds her in a pile of trash as he makes his way home from work one night. Upon turning her on, she is only able to say the word "chi," remembers nothing of her past life, and is unable to perform even simple tasks. Because of this, Hideki names her Chi and undertakes teaching her how to be a persocom. As the series progresses, Chi begins to have visions of another persocom who is identical to herself, and eventually learns this is Freya, her twin, and that Chi was originally called Elda; after Freya fell in love and broke her heart, her memories were downloaded into Chi, before her system was wiped at her own request. Chi meets a series of children's books, A City with No People, about a character searching for the "person just for me," which were written by Chitose Hibiya as a way of reconnecting Chi to her past self as Elda, and to spark her own search for love.
Hideki Motosuwa
A 19-year-old (in the anime, 18) repeat student attempting to get into university by studying at a cram school, while working at a izakaya to make ends meet. One night, while walking home from work, he finds a persocom lying in a pile of garbage. He takes her home, and upon activating her, finds that the only word she can utter is "Chi". Because of this, he gives her the name "Chi" (in the anime, "Chii") and takes her into his care, doing his best to protect and teach her. Despite his shortcomings and occasional moments of awkwardness with the bustling environment of Tokyo, Hideki is a genuinely kind and honest person, whose habit of thinking of others' well-being before his own can cause many problems. When a friend is in trouble, especially Chi, he is always there to help. Although many characters in the series often tease him for being a "nice guy", they turn to him for advice with their problems, knowing he will always hear them out and do his best to assist them.
Chitose Hibiya
The landlady at the apartment where Hideki is staying. In the manga, she was previously an employee of Piffle Princess Enterprises and participated in the development of Angels and later, persocoms. She was married to the president of the company, the late Ichiro "Icchan" Mihara, who used the data gathered from the Angelic Layer research to create the Chobits to be Chitose's children, because she was unable to have children of her own. She also authors the A City with No People series of books to help Chi find the Person Just for Her.
Hiromu Shinbo
Hiromu Shinbo also spelled "Shimbo", is Hideki's best friend and is also studying at Seki cram school. In the anime, Shinbo lives in the same apartment complex as Hideki and is his next-door neighbor. Shinbo is usually the first person Hideki turns to for help with persocoms. Shortly after beginning school he becomes romantically involved with his teacher Takako Shimizu, after finding her in a park late at night because she had been unwittingly locked out of her house by her husband, who was too busy with his persocom. He later elopes with her and convinces her to marry him.
Plum
Plum, called Sumomo in the English anime, is a miniature "mobile persocom"—the equivalent of a laptop computer. Wearing an outfit that makes her resemble a genie, she is programmed to be cute and tends to be quite hyperactive, for example leading Hideki in wakeup exercises each morning and dancing when she is standby mode. Shinbo was the original owner of Plum, but left her with Hideki after leaving with Takako. He later transfers Plum's registration to Hideki, giving him permanent ownership. At the beginning of the series, Shinbo uses Plum in an attempt to analyze Chi, and Plum is nearly broken in the process, requiring new main memory, and in the manga, a new video card as well. Once Kotoko joined Hideki, she quickly came to the conclusion that Plum was mad, with her nonsensical ways.
Minoru
Minoru is a wealthy twelve-year old genius, whose specialty is persocoms. In particular, he has built a custom persocom named Yuzuki, designed to look like his late sister, and has given her self-teaching software, meaning that she can learn things on her own instead of having to have programs loaded into her as if the case with most persocoms.
For the most part, Minoru is a very reserved and soft spoken individual who surrounds himself with persocoms. His curiosity over Chi's origins leads to him becoming one of Hideki Motosuwa's closest friends. Minoru does what he can to help his friends whether it be technological help, such as tracking things down or allowing Hideki to make video phone calls, or advice on relationships with persocoms. Although he is known for being calm and collected most of the time, Minoru's attitude completely changes when Yuzuki is present. Similar to Hideki's behavior toward Chi, Minoru is very protective of Yuzuki and is prone to outbursts whenever she is in trouble. He is also very forgiving, always comforting her on the fact that it is never her fault if something goes wrong.
Yuzuki
Yuzuki is a persocom created by Minoru Kokubunji roughly two years before the start of the series. Yuzuki was created to resemble, physically and mentally, Minoru's late sister, Kaede, who had died from an illness two years earlier. Yuzuki is programmed with all of the data that Minoru could remember about his sister; what she liked, what she disliked, as well as her habits and behaviors. However, Minoru still realizes that no matter how realistic she may be, she is still only a persocom that is following her programming. Yuzuki also possess an awareness of her own limitations.
Toward the end of the anime and manga, Yuzuki loses a large portion of Kaede's personality data as a result of trying to hack into Zima and being counter-hacked by Dita. However, Minoru declines to reenter this data, because he has grown to love Yuzuki for who she is; because she is Yuzuki, rather than because she is a replacement for his sister
Yumi Oimura
Yumi Oumura is a seventeen year old girl who works at the Japanese pub [My Pleasure] alongside Hideki. In the anime, she is the daughter of the club's owner, but in the manga, she is only an employee. It is initially implied that Yumi is interested in a relationship with Hideki, but as the series progresses it is revealed that she initially approached him because he also worked at Club Pleasure, and that she thinks of him as an older brother. Throughout most of the series Yumi has an inferiority complex toward persocoms, and becomes upset at any mention of a human-sized persocom. However, she does carry a small persocom on a key chain that can only do basic functions. In one episode of the anime it is revealed that one of those functions is a cell phone, which is later used by Chi to determine her location. The small persocom is in the shape of the character in the end credits of the anime and in the "A city with no people" book.
Hiroyasu Ueda
Hiroyasu Ueda is the owner of Chiroru, a local bakery which Yumi (and in the manga, Hideki) once worked in and which Chi ends up working at. He is thirty-eight years old, although he looks as though he is only in his mid-20's, at one point noting jokingly that he has a "baby face".
He too has suffered a trauma involving persocoms. When he first opened his bakery, he bought a persocom to help with math and accounting, which he admits he is terrible at. He eventually fell in love with this persocom and then married her, but she developed a hard disk fault which resulted in the gradual degradation of her memory, until she remembered almost nothing at all.
Yoshiyuki Kojima
Known in online circles as "Dragonfly", Yoshiyuki Kojima is a man of few scruples and another custom persocom-builder. Unlike Minoru Kokubunji, he is more obsessed with persocoms and even kidnaps Chi during the course of the story. He attempts to hack into Chi, using all of his persocoms in a massive parallel processing network. During this time, he makes an ill-advised attempt to inappropriately touch Chi, and Freya takes over, restraining him with all of the cords attached to her. She then attacks him with a concussion blast, blowing out the windows in his house and knocking him unconscious. Afterward, to make amends for his actions he lends his help to solving the mystery of Chi and the Chobits.
Kotoko
Kotoko is another laptop persocom like Plum, but she was custom-built by Yoshiyuki and has much higher specifications than Plum. Kotoko originally belonged to Yoshiyuki, but following Chi's kidnapping, Hideki and Shinbo force Yoshiyuki to transfer ownership of Kotoko to Hideki so that her memories of Yoshiyuki kidnapping Chi cannot be erased. Kotoko is far more serious than Plum, and thinks that everyone in the Motosuwa household is crazy, Plum in particular. Kotoko is programmed to always tell the truth, no matter what, even when it works to her owner's disadvantage.
Zima
Zima is one of two government persocoms who are looking for Chi and is the Japanese government's national data bank; during the course of the series an attempt is made by Yuzuki to hack into him to gain information concerning Chi. In the anime, Zima remarks that he and Dita were created from the same basic system architecture that Chi is, rendering them immune to her ability to immobilize persocoms. This does not appear to be the case in the manga.
Zima and Dita have been assigned to prevent Chi from executing her final program, as it is believed that the program would destroy the person-recognition abilities of all persocoms and that it will execute when Chi finds the "person just for her". Zima, however, believes that this may not necessarily be true, and genuinely wants Chi to find happiness. He believes that if Chi can find her own happy ending, he can have happiness with Dita. He loves Dita but she doesn't understand this because she thinks that persocoms are unable to have anything considered to be true feelings. He lies to Dita about Chi's whereabouts and stalls as long as possible before finally going to stop her. However, upon arriving Zima physically restrains Dita from attacking Chi.
Dita
Dita is the second of the two persocoms looking for Chi. Her role is to protect Zima both physically and as a pro-active firewall, hacking into any persocom who tries to hack into Zima and shutting it down. Dita loves Zima and wants him to stay safe, but tries to deny it, believing the persocoms cannot or should not experience such feelings. In the manga, when Zima asks her, "Do you love me?", she replies, "We're persocoms! Be serious!"
